TennaCAM (OBD II / JBUS) Installation

Please note that there is a newer version of this product: TennaCAM 2.0. Contact your Customer Account Manager to upgrade.

What: The TennaCAM Installation is performed in the field using the Tenna App. This process covers the installation of the tracker to the asset, and the association of the tracker to an asset in Tenna.

Who: Mechanics, Equipment Managers, Users with permission to install trackers.

Step 1. Remove the Camera and Fleet Tracker from the package.

The camera and tracker are paired with one another.

The Y-cable and power adapter cable are located within the enclosure under the camera and tracker.

If a JBUS adapter is needed, it will be supplied separately.

Step 2. Link the tracker to the asset in the Tenna App.

Refer to How to Associate a Tracker to an Asset to associate your tracker to an asset prior to beginning the installation process.

Step 3. Locate the Y-cable and plug into the vehicle's diagnostic port.

OBD Connection:
  1. Plug the Y-cable's OBD plug directly into the OBD socket in the vehicle. The plug can be found where the two extension cables meet.

Note: The ends of the extension cables have an OBD style socket for the tracker and camera power adapter.

J1708 Connection (six pins):
  1. Plug the Y-cable's OBD style plug into a straight OBD-to-J1708 adapter cable (available from Tenna, part number DLT-1708-SC).
  2. Plug the J1708 circular connector into the vehicle's diagnostic port.
  3. Secure the locking ring by rotating to a click.

J1939 Connection (nine pins):
  1. Plug the Y-Cable's OBD type plug into a straight OBD-to-J1939 adapter cable's OBD style socket (available from Tenna, part number DLT-1939-S2).
  2. Plug the J1939 circular connector into the vehicle's diagnostic port.
  3. Secure the locking ring by rotating to a click.

Step 4. Plug the TennaCAM Fleet Tracker into the Y-cable.

Note: Either OBD Y-cable socket may be used for the fleet tracker; they are pin-to-pin compatible and wired in parallel and so are interchangeable.

Once plugged in, the fleet tracker will self-initialize.

Step 5. Plug the Power Adapter Cable into the Y-cable.

  1. Carefully install the Y-cable, fleet tracker, power adapter and JBUS adapter cable (if used) under the dashboard, securing the cabling and fleet tracker/power adapter to non-moving parts under the dash using zip ties or similar fasteners.

Note: Ensure a neat and orderly installation that does not interfere with vehicle structural components, the steering wheel shaft or any vehicle circuitry.

Note: Ensure that the wiring cannot fall and interfere with the driver's safe operation of the vehicle under any circumstances.

  2. Route the power adapter cable up the left side of the dash area, along the A pillar and around to the center of the windshield
    1. Tuck the cable where possible to conceal.
    2. Coil and tie off any excess with a cable tie, securing to avoid flailing with vehicle motion or wind.

  3. While the ignition is still off and the tracker has been plugged in, verify that:
    1. The tracker shows a steady green light; the red/blue and amber lights will flash intermittently.
    2. Within one minute, all lights will turn off and stay off.

Step 6. Mount the TennaCAM to the vehicle's windshield.

  1. Thoroughly clean and dry the area where the camera is to be mounted.
  2. Plug the previously installed power adapter cable's USB B-type plug securely into the camera's USB power socket.

  3. Using the provided suction cups or after peeling back the adhesive tape backing, mount the camera holder towards the top of the windshield where it will not block the view of the road or surroundings.
    1. Note: The provided suction cups and adhesive backing are located underneath the tracker and camera in the box.
    2. Note: Use the included clips with adhesive backs to organize the cord along the top of the windshield.

Secure the camera to the holder.

    3. Important: Make sure the side of the camera with the Tenna logo and four small LEDs around the lens faces the driver.
    4. Important: Verify mounting integrity by gently tugging the mounted camera. The camera must not fall or impair the safe conduct of the vehicle at any time.
    5. Note: You can adjust the camera angle to capture the cab by turning the camera knob manually.

Step 7. Activate the Fleet Tracker.

  1. Turn on the vehicle's ignition.
  2. Verify the following:
    1. Tracker: The lights flash, then go dark and stay dark.
    2. Camera: Red light is lit steadily. White light may flicker intermittently (SD card activity).
    3. Note: The blue light on the camera will only illuminate when the camera is uploading a video.
    4. Note: If the tracker shows a slow flashing red light, there is an installation issue. Shut the vehicle off, disconnect the OBD/JBUS port, wait ten minutes and plug back in. Wait five minutes before starting the ignition again. If the slow flashing light reappears, contact Tenna customer support.

Step 8. Test the Fleet Tracker.

  1. Drive the vehicle at least two miles on mapped roads.
    1. Important: Drive on mapped roads so that the GPS tracking can be verified in Step 9.
  2. Park the vehicle outside in a location that provides a clear view of the sky.
  3. Turn off the ignition and remove the key from the ignition switch.
  4. Record the following information about the test drive:
    1. The time the test drive ended.
    2. The current mileage displayed on the vehicle's odometer.
    3. The route driven.
    4. Note: It is imperative that you do NOT cycle this ignition once the test cycle is completed. Doing so will result in inconsistent data.
    5. Note: The TennaCAM automatically connects to your tracker at the beginning of every trip.

Step 9. Verify the tracker.

Complete the remaining steps presented in the Tenna App to finalize the installation. Once complete, tracker verification will be available in the Tenna web portal.
