Ping on Motion Overview
Ping on Motion capabilities allow users to be notified is an asset is moving with the ignition OFF (i.e., being towed or stolen).
In this article:
What is considered motion when an asset is not running?
Which trackers support Ping on Motion?
How will I be notified of motion events?
Some trackers are equipped with “Ping on Motion” functionality, which allows for location updates and configurable immediate alerts when an asset is in motion, even when turned off (i.e., being towed/transported or theft). This functionality, in conjunction with our configurable Geofence Enter/Exit Alerts, allows for the appropriate users to be immediately notified if assets are leaving or entering a specific site, yard or fence when the ignition is off.
What is considered motion when an asset is not running?
Motion can still be detected even though the asset is turned off. This could be when the asset is being towed and experiences things like acceleration, slowing down, braking, bumps in the road, etc.
Which trackers support Ping on Motion?
The following trackers support Ping on Motion:
- TennaCANbus
- TennaMINI family (except TennaMINI Battery)
- TennaFLEET II
How will I be notified of motion events?
Assets with an installed tracker, that supports Ping on Motion, with the ignition off will ping any/all detected motion events every 5 minutes, which will be recorded as a Location Update for that asset (not a Trip).
Note: Motion events will only register if the tracker’s battery is not dead.
Important! By default, these updates will not notify a user but are accessible in the Location report for the asset.
Power Users may turn on Geofence Enter/Exit Alerts for immediate notification so that other users are alerted of motion events when an asset leaves or enters an established Geofence.
See: Permissions Overview for more information.
For Example:
An excavator with an installed TennaMINI Plug-In Solar is being towed to another job site. With the ignition off, the excavator is loaded onto a transport trailer and driven from Site A to Site B, 15 miles away. Joe Smith is the Equipment Manager for Site A and Site B, so he has Data Access and Permissions for all equipment assigned to sites. Joe has Geofence Enter/Exit Alerts set up to alert him immediately through his Notifications Settings.
As the transport trailer moves through Site A, Joe will receive a location update every 5 minutes. Once the transport trailer breaks the Site A geofence, Joe will receive an immediate Enter/Exit alert. During the 15-mile drive to Site B, the tracker will continue to report motion as Location updates every 5 minutes.
Important! Even though the asset is not technically moving when towed, motion events will usually trigger from the trailer’s acceleration, braking, lane change, or bumps in the road.
Once the trailer reaches Site B and crosses the Geofence, Joe will receive another immediate Enter/Exit alert.
Even though the excavator is turned off during this entire trip, Joe has accurate location data to follow along throughout.
Joe would also receive an Enter/Exit report immediately should someone remove the asset from the Geofence during after hours (i.e. theft).
Where can I view these location updates?
You can view location updates triggered by ping on motion any where that you can view location updates in Tenna, including: Asset Details (Last Reading Timestamp), Trips Map View, and Master Map.
