How to Create and Edit Categories (Desktop)

Set up categories and subcategories for your assets using Tenna’s default categories or create your own custom categories. Category types dictate the fields that apply to assets under that category. For example, the category type of "Equipment" will require hours, and the category type of "Vehicles" will require miles. Subcategories are optional. Refer to Category Types Overview for additional information.

Permission Requirements: Power Users can create categories.

NOTE: Creating and editing categories can only be done on a desktop, not in the Tenna App.

Navigating to the Categories Settings

1

Click "Settings" on the top right.

2

Select the "Categories" tab.

Creating a New Major Category

Pro Tip! We encourage you to familiarize yourself with Tenna's default categories while you are creating your own categories. For future reporting integrity, it is recommended to pay close attention to the existing categories to avoid creating duplicates within the same levels.

1

Click the plus icon to the right of the Major Category list header.

2

Enter the name of the new category in the top field.

3

Select a category type from the dropdown.

NOTE: If you are tracking consumables, the "Category Name" can be whatever you would like it to be, but the "Category Type" must be "Consumables".

4

Select a map view icon for the new category from the dropdown.

5

Click "Create".

Editing an Existing Major Category

1

Click the pencil icon next to the major category you wish to edit.

2

Edit the fields as needed.

3

Click "Update".

NOTE: A "Category Type" of an existing category cannot be changed.  If the category type is incorrect, a new Major Category must be created.

Deleting an Existing Major Category

1

Click the trashcan icon next to the major category you wish to delete.

2

Click "Delete" to confirm.

3

If this category is assigned to existing assets, you will be prompted to re-categorize them. Select the category they should be associated with and click "Update assets and delete the category".

Creating Subcategories

1

Select a major category to manage its subcategories.

2

Click the plus icon to the right of the "Subcategory 1" list header.

3

Enter the name of the subcategory.

4

Click "Create".

5

Repeat these steps for Subcategory 2 and Subcategory 3, as needed.
