How to Create and Edit Categories (Desktop)
What: Default categories and subcategories for your assets in addition to the ability to create your own.
Who: Power Users can create categories.
NOTE:
Creating and editing categories can only be done on a desktop, not in the Tenna App.
Navigating to the Categories setting.
Step 1. Click "Settings" on the upper right of the screen.
Step 2. Click the "Categories" tab.
Creating a new Major Category.
Step 1. On the Settings>Category tab, click the plus icon to the right of the Major Category list header.
Step 2. Enter the Name of the category in the top box.
Step 3. Select a category type for the category from the drop down in the second box.
Step 4. Select a map view icon for the Major Category from the drop down choices.
Step 5. Select "Create".
Category types dictate the fields that apply to assets under that category. For example, the category type of "Equipment" will require hours and the category type of "Vehicles" will require miles. Refer to Category Types Overview for additional information.
Note on Consumables: If you are tracking consumables, the "Category Name" can be whatever you would like it to be, but the "Category Type" must be "Consumables".
Editing an existing Major Category.
Step 1. Click the pencil icon next to the Major Category you wish to edit.
Step 2. Click into the Major Category name box to edit.
Once edits are made, click "Update".
Note: You cannot change the "Category Type" of an existing category. If the category type is incorrect, you will need to create a new Major Category.
To delete a category, select the trash can icon next to the category name. You will be prompted to re-categorize any existing assets under this category before you can delete it. Review the list of affected assets and select new categories manually or in bulk.
Adding Subcategories
Subcategories are optional.
Step 1. Select a major category to manage its subcategories.
Type in the Subcategory name and click "Update".
Note: To add subcategories, the parent level must be selected first.
Pro Tip: We encourage you to familiarize yourself with Tenna's defaults while you are creating your own categories. For future reporting integrity, it is recommended to pay close attention to the existing categories to avoid creating duplicates within the same levels.
