Current Miles Overview and FAQ

Tenna tracks current miles for assets with the category type "truck" or "vehicle" with an installed and verified tracker. This data is useful for understanding current status, reporting, and triggering automatic preventative maintenance. Assets with the following trackers will report miles, provided the tracker is installed, verified and online:

  • TennaCANbus
  • TennaFLEET Tracker OBD II
  • TennaFLEET Tracker JBUS
  • TennaFLEET II (with or without TennaCAM or TennaCAM 2.0)

Permission Requirements: Users with the "Miles" permissions can view asset miles. Users with the "Edit/Update Asset" permission can manually update an asset's miles.

Miles in Asset Details

You can learn the following things from the Miles / Hours section of your Asset Details page:

  • Current Miles: Represents the total number of miles a vehicle has traveled.

NOTE: Current Miles will show the total miles from the last completed trip. If the asset is running (“live”), those miles will not be counted until the trip is complete.

  • ECU Odometer Provided: Does the vehicle’s ECU provide odometer data to the Tenna tracker – Yes or No?
  • Ignore ECU Odometer: Has the user chosen to “Ignore ECU Odometer” – Yes or No?

Calculating Vehicle Current Miles

Tenna trackers capture trip data that is useful for understanding status, reporting, and triggering automatic preventative maintenance. Current Miles in Tenna represents the total number of miles a vehicle has traveled.

Users select their preference for sourcing Miles data during the Tracker Verification process. Users may also change these settings in Edit Asset at any time. View How to Update Current Miles (Desktop) for more information.

Current Miles is sourced from an asset in one of two ways:

  1. ECU Provided Odometer: If the vehicle’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is capable of reporting an odometer value, that information is passed to Tenna and is used to overwrite the value of Current Miles for the asset.

NOTE: Tenna trackers that are capable of capturing ECU odometer data include: TennaCANbus, TennaFLEET II, and TennaCAM 2.0.

  1. Baseline + Trip Distance: If no odometer value is provided by the ECU (or ECU Provided Odometer is Ignored), Tenna will automatically add the most recent trip distance to Current Miles.

NOTE: Current Miles will only be tracked and populated if the Miles checkbox is enabled in Edit Asset. Miles is enabled by default when an asset is created.

FAQ

How do I know if my vehicle's ECU is capable of reporting mileage?

Once the tracker is successfully installed, it must go through the Tracker Verification process. If a vehicle’s ECU reports mileage, the field for ECU Provided Odometer will show a value for the mileage. If the value reads “N/A”, the ECU for that asset is not capable of providing odometer data.

NOTE: Depending on the Year/Make/Model of your vehicle, an ECU may not be capable of providing odometer data. Typically, this only relates to uncommon makes/models or very old vehicles.

TennaCANbus trackers will show a section of ECU Provided Data Points in Tracker Details after the tracker is installed. All data points that are supported by the asset and tracker are shown in this list.

Once a tracker is successfully installed and completed a trip, a field for ECU Odometer Provided (in Asset Details > Miles/Hours) will show whether the vehicle’s ECU provides mileage data.

What do I do if my vehicle’s ECU does not report mileage?

In some cases, based on vehicle specifics like age or unique make/model, a tracker may not be able to report ECU odometer values, even though Tenna’s trackers are capable of reporting this information when it’s available.

If your vehicle’s ECU does not provide an odometer value, Tenna allows users (with the correct permissions) to manually update a baseline value for Current Miles. Tenna will then automatically add the total miles from each future trip to the baseline.

Why do the Current Miles in Tenna differ from my vehicle’s dashboard odometer reading?

The mileage reported by the ECU may differ from the value shown on the vehicle’s dashboard due to various factors. View Miles or Hours Discrepancies Troubleshooting for more information.

Why would I choose to ignore the ECU Odometer on my asset?

Although we recommend using the ECU as the source of truth, you may choose to ignore ECU data for multiple reasons.

This can be done during the Tracker Verification process, or later in the Edit Asset > General Information tab.

View How to Update Current Miles (Desktop) to learn more about the Ignore ECU Odometer option and manually updating Current Miles.
