How to Configure Afterhours Alerts (Desktop)

Afterhours Alert notifies a user when an asset activity occurs during an account-defined “afterhours” time period. This article shows how to configure afterhours alerts, including afterhours triggers and notification examples.

Overview

Afterhours Alerts can be triggered by assets equipped with a Tenna tracker* when the following activity occurs:

  • Trip with an ignition on event
  • OR
  • Distance change of 100 Meters (~300 Feet)

*AEMP assets aren’t supported with this alert.

Important! This alert must be configured and enabled. For an individual to receive alerts, they must be defined in the “Recipient to Alert” field.

Ideal For:

  • Theft alerts for high-value or sensitive asset categories.
  • Preventing unauthorized use of specific equipment.
  • Reporting on personal use of assets that don’t meet established policies.

What it is Not:

  • A Geofence-based Alert: This alert does not mean a breach of a geofence. The Geofence Enter/Exit alerts can be used for that purpose.
  • Driver Monitoring Alerts: This alert is not designed to monitor trip activity.
  • Based on minimum duration: This alert simply notifies of an ignition on during a designated after hour period; it is not based on a minimum run time to trigger.

How to Enable Afterhours Alert

Permission Requirements: Power Users and Users with the Configurations permission enabled.

1

Click Settings in the top right corner. Select the Configurations > Notifications tab.

2

Under Messages > Trip Events, find Afterhours Trigger.

3

Click Configured Triggers.

4

Click Create Trigger in the bottom left corner of the window.

5

Configure the Afterhours trigger.

  • Name: Name the afterhours alert trigger

Pro Tip! It is recommended to name the trigger for the Time Period and Category it applies to.

For example, the below is Weeknight Theft Prevention. It will alert if any assets with the major category Supervisor Trucks turns on between the hours of 12 midnight and 5 am.

  • Asset Category: Choose which asset categories you want to be notified of ignition on events for this alert

Note: Any assets added to the chosen category in the future will automatically inherit this afterhours alert.

  • Alert On: Days and Start/End Time that are considered “Afterhours” for this alert (i.e., when you want to be notified if ignition on occurs)
    • Day Range: Select a range (ex: Fri-Sun)
    • Specific Days: Select individual days in the week (ex: Mon, Wed, Fri)

Important! Triggers cannot have overlapping time periods for the same asset category.

Note: Established time windows apply to account time zone, not the time zone in which the asset is located.

Pro Tip! Below are examples of good and bad configured Afterhours Triggers. Pay special attention to the use of Specific Days or Day Range to Alert On.

Creating Example #1 and Example #3 on an account would pair nicely to capture any unwarranted activity in the evenings and on the weekends (when working hours may differ depending on the day of the week), without creating a time period/category overlap that would result in an error.

Creating only Example #2 would capture after hours on the weekend, but would not capture daytime use on the weekends.

  • Recipients to Alert (optional): Choose from existing Tenna Users or Contacts that you want to receive this notification.
    • Users will receive email, banner, and desktop messages. The user will receive all of these alert types.

Afterhours Email Alert Example

The below is an example of an Afterhours Alert email. It includes:

  • Asset Photo
  • Asset Name
  • Asset Category
  • Asset Assignee
  • Timestamp of Alert
  • Alert Trigger Rules
  • Map of Alert Location

Note: Tenna Trackers support store and forward. The tracker will store the location and telemetry data while offline (i.e. no cellular service) and will then forward the stored messages once it comes back online. This means in the event of poor or no cellular service, alerts may be generated for assets a few minutes or a few hours after they physically moved or had an ignition on. For more information on Tracker Status, view Tracker Status Report (Desktop).
